July's To Code: A Guide to Being A Better Lady (better late than never)
TOMS eco-friendly (a pair of shoes goes to shoe-less children for every pair bought) have become a popular choice of footwear over the past few years. Across the board, hipsters, kids, doctors, moms, and dads are all rocking a pair of these minimalist shoes. I'm going to make this simple. TOMS are OK in my book, although I can't say you'll catch me in a pair anytime soon. HOWEVER, I've seen far too many ladies of all ages wearing their TOMS with skirts and dresses.
If you want to look like a ballerina in your pointe shoes then by all means, wear your TOMS in every outfit you own. Otherwise, put on a pair of flats or pumps and head out on the town when in skirts or dresses, wear your Classic TOMS with your favorite jeans or shorts and keep it at that. Same rules should apply to men as well.

UPDATE: Toms Shoes have some wedges and actual ballet flats in their line up since my original post. I've seen them in store and on a few people and will promote ladies to where these options however they please. My original statement stands though on the classic TOMS.
Not all dresses and skirts are professional/evening wear. If you're aiming for business-wear or evening attire, TOMS are obviously a no go. But there is nothing that says skirts and dresses can't be worn just as casually as shorts or jeans... you don't have to like it, but this is an overgeneralization.

ReplyDeleteReferring your comment, I can see where you might see that TOMS can be worn with more causal skirts and dresses. Although it is a good thought when comfort is in mind, women in general have such a wide range of footwear choices without going to dressy or sky high heels. With all the strap'y sandals, and the wide range of flats out there (both in eco and animal friend versions) to opt for TOMS is just inexcusable. Style is a personal thing, but form and function have a place when you as a lady opt for your feminine sartorial roots that is skirts and dresses. Its all about lines, shape, and compatibility (even when mixing and matching), and TOMS, no matter how you try to incorporate them into your dress and skirt combos, if they are visible, just breaks every rule in the book, not to mention they just cut you off at the ankle.
If you want another point of view, just changed the word TOMS for "flipflops" and you'll find another NO NO for dresses, unless your at a beach wedding, then by all means, toss on your Rainbows. No need to try walking in the sand in your five inch pumps.
I agree with Angel, unless you go for TOMS' wedges, which are great with dresses, skirts, pants, just about anything! An added plus...they are comfortable too!
