Charleston Preview!!

I hope you make it a point to visit each week (if not daily) throughout July. I'll be posting photos from my summer visit to Charleston. The photo above is one of my "After Dark" photos from the market. With the sidewalk traffic blocking most of the shoot, I felt this would be a great preview for what's to come. I'll be posting one "After Dark" photo each week along with the normal daylight hour fashion finds from Chuck Town.

Rogue Wave Surf Shop, Charleston, SC

So about a week ago, I went down to Charleston, SC for a wedding and to go surfing with a friend. Another Charleston based surf-brethren of mine, Rhett Boyd, just opened his first retail space for his surf shop Rogue Wave Surf Shop or RW+SS for short, so I stopped by to take a look while I was in town.

I'd like to say from the start that calling Rogue Wave a surf shop is very misleading because it is 100% boutique, a boutique that sells really sick surfboards. Rhett started out by selling some artfully crafted surf boards from the California based company Gato Heroi, along with custom vintage screen printed T-shirts, and some great other vintage finds out of his home, trunk shows, or online via his blog. He now carries those as well as a few other brands like Katin board shorts, Apolis Global , CXXVI , shirts by Riviera Club, and W Durable. (Continued below)

I can't tell you how detailed and hands-on Rhett is with each product that he carries. Many of the new products found at RW+SS are made to specifications set to Rhett's standards. This makes your purchase at Rogue Wave something hard to find anywhere else.

It's hard to really to put it all in words, but Rhett is really going to make "waves" in the surf community, from his local and American made stock, to his soon to be stocked boards made by southern shaper Richard Prause designed with Charleston's surf in mind. You can even find some custom made items made by Rhett himself.

Rogue Wave Surf Shop is definitely here to stay. Rhett is all surfer, a surfer and a true southern gentleman, one who I'd say spends 50% of his time in a wetsuit or trunks and the other 50% in a bow tie and tortoise shell glasses. Having style both in the water and out, it's hard to ignore the RW+SS movement that's driven by Rhett's passion for surfing ans surf culture new and old. It's a living throw back to the hay day of surfing in the 50's and 60's; the boards were massive, the shorts were short, the music was mellow, and surfers were confident enough to wear a tie out of the water after the swell had washed out with the tide.

If you are in Charleston, visiting Rogue Wave needs to be on your to do list. It's currently at 69 Spring St., Downtown Charleston, and if you can make it to one of his parties or surf n' suds you'll really be doing yourself a solid. If you feel like you are about to walk into someone's house, you're at the right place. Let's hope his permit goes through soon and he can hang up his sign out front.

Visiting Charleston SC

I'll be in Charleston this Friday and Saturday. I got a full schedule but I plan to set aside some time to hit the street with my camera.

Charleston is a lot of fun on the blogging front. I can walk down King Street and get a month's worth of photos in about 30 minutes. I'm still working out my schedule but I'm hoping to meet up with a few people while in town also. We'll see if our schedules line up.

Photo Evolution, King St., Charleston

So if you didn't know, I don't own a nice Digital SLR camera (yet), so a bit of post editing goes into making my photos stand out. I would like to share how each stage works out with this lovely photo from Charleston of this young lady rocking her Barbour jacket, which seemed to be the coat of the season down there because I saw them everywhere!

First, I get home and take a look at each photo I'm going to use. They look something like this. A bit gray you would say.

After this, I load the photo into GIMP and start working. A bit of color level here, contrast there, a bit of airbrushing when needed so people aren't embarrassed that the zit that they woke up with is now on the internet being seen by who knows how many strangers (remember granny panties from Zack and Miri makes a Porno?). Yeah, not going to have people made fun of on my account. Anyways, next step is the color final, or what I call the "standard" file.

Much better! Bricks look red, coat looks green, shoes look gold, skin tone looks nice and tan and not all vamp'y. Most of the time I go one more step to make my photos stand out a little bit more. I add some blur to the background, which looks like this.

Voila! A little blur makes a world of difference. Carefully placed, most of the time unless you look very closely, you can't even tell I added it and it just looks like a natural depth of field produced by the camera. Unfortunately adding blur to my photos (especially when I come back from a trip and have 20 or more photos to edit) is a bit time consuming. Turning what should be about a 5 minute per photo process turns into a 10-20 minute endeavor. So for the most part adding blur is no longer a priority unless I think it's the only way the photo will make sense. I'm planning to have a new SLR camera with a 50mm prime lens by the end of this summer, so I want the obvious upgrade in photo quality to happen.

So there you go! A little bit of Street Style Photography Magic!

Grady-Ervin & Co. 313 King Street., Charleston

So I didn't have much need to shop while in Charleston, the Air Force gave me most of the clothing I wore, hehe.. just kidding. Anyways, one of my favorite shops to stop by while downtown was always Grady-Ervin & Co. Unlike most gentlemen stores of this kind, they don't judge no matter who walks in. I was once told by one of their employees, one of their most frequent customers walks in most of the time in Gym clothing. I got a lot of my accessories from here, ties, socks, pocket squares, suspenders, I have a few hand made bow-ties bought from here. When your in Charleston, you got to stop by, they actually taught me how to tie my first bow-tie which I also got from them.
